On January 20, AmCham Haiti Board Members Maulik Radia and Frédéric Vaval, together with Executive Director Erika Rosenthal, met with Kara Babrowski, Advisor in the Economic Section of the U.S. Embassy in Haiti, to discuss priority issues affecting the business environment and Haiti’s economic outlook.

The exchange focused first on the security situation and its direct impact on economic activity. Updates were shared regarding the operational timeline of the GSF deployment, with the first contingent expected to arrive in April and expanded military operations anticipated in June–July. Participants also discussed the importance of securing ports and airports as critical infrastructure for trade and logistics.

Visa and immigration policies were another key topic. Current U.S. policy does not allow routine visa renewals for Haitian nationals. Exceptional medical cases may be considered on a limited basis, provided applicants present a complete medical file and proof of financial capacity to cover treatment. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is scheduled to expire on February 3, prompting discussion on the private sector’s role in supporting employment opportunities and economic reintegration.

Economic recovery and job creation were central themes throughout the meeting. U.S. counterparts emphasized the importance of private-sector job growth, while AmCham Haiti reiterated that meaningful expansion of employment depends fundamentally on restoring security conditions. The conversation also touched on HOPE/HELP and the broader role of humanitarian and economic support in stabilizing the country.
